Abstract
Increasing rates of morbidity and mortality makes it crucial to prevent and treat diabetes. In this manner, many researchers have studied chitosan-based compounds as prospective bioactive materials during past few decades due to their high potential utilization in the food, pharmaceutical, agricultural and environmental applications. Recently, several studies have suggested chitosan-derivatives as active agents for treating obesity-related diabetic complications as well as preventing the onset of diabetes. Although, the detailed mechanisms of action are yet to be resolved, researches demonstrated enough evidence to focus our attention to chitosan and its derivatives in order to produce natural therapeutic agents against diabetes and diabetic complications. In this review, we have briefly summarized the reported anti-diabetic activities of chitosan and its derivatives with respect to acting mechanisms and structure in order to provide some valuable insights into novel chitosan-based derivatives and their utilization for anti-diabetic purposes.
